Employees are the heartbeat of an organization.
During American Heart Month in February, the MBS Team was challenged to engage in ways to support and strengthen our hearts, both literally and figuratively. We checked off activities on our Heart Health Bingo card and found ways to connect as a mainly remote team.
After all, healthy hearts = healthy workplaces.
Heart Health Bingo
One of our employees created a bingo card which contained challenges that supported our body, mind, and soul – one for each day of the month, if we chose to complete it that way.

We bolstered our physical health with better eating habits, drinking more water, exercise, and proper sleep. To support our mental health, we read, played games with friends and family, and avoided screens for certain periods of time. We renewed our souls by meditating, getting outside, and watching the sunrise and sunset. Not only did this make us feel better individually, it also made us feel better collectively.
As we progressed through the month, it was good for our hearts to see pictures shared by our co-workers almost daily on Slack. We felt more connected to each other as we all stretched ourselves to be healthier and even try something new, like a new recipe or an impromptu dance party!

Connecting our Remote Team
In addition to the Heart Health Bingo, we are also reading together The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace by Gary Chapman. We spend time discussing what we’ve learned at our monthly staff meetings on Zoom. We are also looking forward to our first in-person get-together of the year where we will spend an afternoon eating, laughing, and competing in a cupcake challenge.
For a team that works mostly remotely, the ability to connect with each other doesn’t happen as naturally or easily as it does in an in-person office environment. Therefore, it’s important to intentionally and continually create these opportunities for connection. Building strong connections with co-workers allows for effective communication, the exchange of ideas, and seamless integration of individual contributions to the collective whole. Additionally, in times of stress or challenges, having a well-connected team is instrumental in maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Overall, it helps to create a healthier workplace.
Just as a healthy heart is crucial for sustaining life and growth, prioritizing employee well-being is essential for the success of any organization. By fostering an environment that promotes positive physical, mental, and spiritual/emotional health, companies not only boost individual productivity but also nurture a supportive work culture. Acknowledging employees as the heartbeat of an organization and investing in their wellness creates a resilient workforce poised for long-term success.
